đ Pitch of the week: The Prime Day pitch that landed coverage
No need to reinvent the wheel, pitches
October is Pitchtober here at Pitch, Please! The Pitch of the Week post spotlights one standout pitch from my inbox and breaks down why it worked (or why it didnât).
Welcome to the inaugural Pitch of the Week, where I share a peek into my inbox đ¨
If your week has already been bonkers, I stand with you in solidarity. Iâd love to buy you a cup of coffee as we kick off Prime Day âď¸ Comment your email address below, and Iâll send a Starbucks gift card to one lucky pitch.
Pitching is an art thatâlike most creative workâcan be hard to articulate. Itâs often one of those âI know it when I see itâ type things. Iâm a visual person, so if you are too, this quick breakdown with emojis, bullet points, and the occasional pop of pink hopefully sears into your brain and hones your pitching craft for the better.
Now letâs take a peek into a Prime Day pitch that had me at âhello.â Or⌠âhi.â
đ The Pitch
Subject: â30%+ Off Prime Big Deal Days - Steamers, Coffee Makers, and Glassware - Home & Lifestyleâ
âHi! If youâre covering October Prime Day deals, I wanted to make sure you have these from three premium home and lifestyle brands â 30% off on Amazonâs Choice and best-sellers! High-res images here.â
đ ď¸ The Breakdown
What worked:
A clear and concise subject line: The subject line provides nearly all the information the writer needs in only 73 characters: the % off, specific tentpole, types of products included, and the product category.
All the info upfront: Tentpole pitches can cut right to the chase, and the top graf of this pitch does just that. Again, it provides the most important info up front, without any unnecessary language or background noise.
Assets high up: High-res images are linked in the same line, providing assets by the second sentence, and eliminating the need for a âdo you have high-res images?â follow-up email.
Lists, links + pics: What followed (which I didnât include in the above example) is a bulleted list of the products. The below format is extremely clear, straightforward, and takes away all potential guesswork.
Up to TK% Off at This Brand â brief description of the brand
30% off [Linked Product] â now $98; Amazon Best-Seller
đĄThe Takeaway
Good tentpole pitches cut through the bullsh*t and provide the writer with all the most pertinent information within the first few sentences. The formatting and overall structure of the pitch makes it even more palatable. Itâs the Apple store of pitchesâclean, clear, conscise, and user-friendly.
