If at First You Don't Succeed, Dust Yourself Off and Pitch Again
Officially entering my Aaliyah phase and I hope you're here for it.
Actually, I’ve always had an Aaliyah phase. Let’s be honest.
Anyways, in case anyone had any doubt, your girl can officially confirm it is in fact football season because there are now two TVs in my living room. Sick.
Other fun updates: my hardcover of I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy arrived yesterday, I finally finished wallpapering the powder room, and I recently found out I’ll be field reporting at Climate Week.
In other news, you may have noticed there is now an option to become a paid subscriber to Pitch, Please. As you can probably imagine, I’m really excited about this opportunity and I take it very seriously. I have lofty goals for this thing and I’m really hoping to shape it into (an even more) valuable resource that ya’ll hopefully feel is worth paying for. Now more than ever, your feedback is especially welcomed.
BTW, do you need to catch up on PP? Make sure to freshen up on Press Hook, the ins and outs of affiliate marketing, and how to pitch a client as an expert. And if you haven’t signed up for the Ultimate Masterclass and Introduction to Affiliate Marketing for Publicists, *Ellie Goulding voice* what are you waiting for?!
Back to the Aaliyah of it all. It all comes back to Baby Girl (better known as Aaliyah). Yes, I’m listening to Romeo Must Die and feeling sentimental. That’s okay. But publicists should know better than anyone, ya gotta be resilient.
If at first you don’t succeed, dust yourself off and pitch again.
Pitch, pitch, pitch again (and again)
You may think I’m crazy! A writer, asking for more pitches? Begging for more follow-ups? Soliciting email pitches when there’s already 732 unreads in her inbox?! Insanity!
Listen, I don’t want to comb through any more emails than you do, but I would be remiss to acknowledge that there are plenty of pertinent emails that I do miss. Sometimes I only catch them on the second or third follow-up.
And I’m usually happy I did.
Or maybe email #1 wasn’t relevant to something I was working on originally. But by the time that follow-up email #2 came around, it was.
I am not declaring open season on willy-nilly follow-ups. It’s never okay to, well, be ruthless or annoying (my favorite is the backhanded like, “Maybe you missed this genius idea the first time around but I’m willing to forgive you” vibes).
You know, don’t be petty. Don’t be rude. Be an adult. We’re all adults here.
But like, dust yourself off and pitch again.
I pinky swear if it’s something I’m interested in, you’ll hear from me.
And if you don’t, you know, that’s okay, too. Not every pitch is for everyone. When something makes sense for both of us, we’ll make it work.
