🙋🏻♀️ FAQs
Q: Who is Pitch, Please for?
A: Pitch, Please is a Substack newsletter for publicists. If you’re just a small town PR girl living in a lonely PR world, then this is the Substack for you. If you enjoy terrible puns, this may also be the Substack for you.
Q: Who is the writer behind Pitch, Please?
A: Hi 🙋🏻♀️ I’m Steph. I’m the HPIC—that’s Head Pitch in Charge—here at Pitch, Please.
I’ve been writing for brands since my first big-girl job in 2013 where I focused on writing celebrity content. After a quick stint in social media marketing, I went freelance in 2016. It was during this time that I started to think very critically about the pitches I was receiving from publicists—pitches I liked, which ones I didn’t, and which ones worked (and didn’t).
I’m currently a News & Deals Shopping Writer at Better Homes & Gardens where I namely cover sales on home products.
Previously, I also wrote shopping content across other DotDashMeredith brands, including Real Simple, Southern Living, and The Spruce.
Q: What will I learn by subscribing to and reading Pitch, Please?
A: The goal of Pitch, Please is to be a resource for everything publicists want to know about pitching journalists (with a side of sass, of course). Writers see hundreds of pitches a day; I have 3,439 unread emails at the moment—and that’s just on my personal/freelance account 🫣 By subscribing to and reading PP, you will (hopefully) learn the anatomy of a perfect pitch and how to stand out from the dreaded email slush pile where pitches go to die.
Pitch, Please is one writer’s perspective on what makes a good pitch (and unfortunately, what makes a terrible one). Expect resources, ideas, tips, tricks, do’s, don’t’s, and real-life examples of what works and what doesn’t.
Q: How do I pitch you?
A: Great question! I do not respond to direct replies to the newsletter, so please don’t hit “REPLY” after reading a post. You can, however, craft a separate email thread with a clear and concise subject line to either my freelance/personal email or work email.
💻 FAQs about subscriptions
Q: What’s included in a free subscription?
A: Your free subscription includes occasional free posts that are (usually) called Pitch, Free. These intermittent posts include calls for pitches for the week and some other non-industry related chatter about pop culture topics and the like.
Q: How do I manage my Substack subscription?
A: I’m no tech wizard, but you manage your subscription directly through your Substack account. You can upgrade, unsubscribe, or pause whenever your heart desires (but please stay 💓).
Q: Is there a way to choose which content I get emails about?
A: Apparently, the answer to this is a resounding yes. However—as mentioned above—I’m not very technologically inclined, so I have no idea how to do so. I did read on reddit, however, that you can customize email preferences via your Substack dashboard. Go to Settings > and somewhere in there, you should be able to opt into the content you’re interested in, including Substack’s Sections.
